Future police officers get hands-on practice through West Ada CTE

Practice means being prepared!

When it comes to being ready for their future career— the law enforcement students from the West Ada School District's Career Technical Education Program are getting the crucial training they need.

After three years in the program, senior students are getting their hands on the same tools they'll be using one day in police academy!

This week, students spent a day at the College of Western Idaho in Nampa using the college police training facility.

They got to practice pursuits in a driving simulator and tactics in a virtual shooting range.

"It's one thing to talk about something in class," said Mike Chilton, Law Enforcement Lead for West Ada School District's CTE. "It's another thing to actually get out in the field."

It's a hands on experience that is giving students the confidence they will need in their future career— before even graduating high school!

"All of us who joined this program will already know what to do having been in this program for years," said Colby Klauer, a senior law enforcement student from Eagle High School. "It really gives us an edge."

Law enforcement is just one of more than 50 programs offered by West Ada's CTE program.

There are about 200 students in the law enforcement program, ranging from sophomores to seniors.

Classes take place every other day, for half of the day at Renaissance High School. All students in the West Ada School District can join.
